ARTIST STATEMENT
Conceptually, in my work I am interested creating images that create a discussion, provoke new thoughts and initiate a shift in peoples thinking about the women in their lives or themselves.
Thematically, my aim is to focus on the aspects of women’s life in which inequality and systemic oppression still exist within contemporary society. In doing so I aim to metaphorically shine a light on what is hidden or not openly spoken about.
In my choice of subject; I choose to paint the women that I do, to bring importance to what our society has deemed unimportant.
The history of portrait painting is one in which the elite, the influential, the religious and the historically esteemed are who don our canvases. In my work my aim is that the viewer interprets my subjects in the same way; as monumental, relevant, and noteworthy.
Technically, I approach the painting with three goals in mind; a dynanism of surface, unpredictable colour choices, and spontaneity in paint application.
Aesthetically, I am hoping to create a surface on my canvas that leaves the mark of my hand. In doing so, I am also present in the work in the minds eye of the viewer.
In this sense my work becomes a kind of ‘double portrait’. A portrait of my subject and the portrait of me as a artist in the mystical process and act of painting
